Launch of the restoration of Mouth of Ussel River, Germany

News

On April 28th 2022 representatives of Uniper, LRA-ND, UNB, WWA-ING, state forestry and IL gathered on site at the Ingolstadt Power Plant to discuss the start of the restoration actions provided within the LIFE WILDisland project.

In order to obtain a dynamic riverine landscape, it is planned to re-move the embankments near the mouth of the river Ussel on a stretch of about 1 km at the left riverbank of the Danube (rkm 2486.3-2487.4). This leads to the reconnection of a side branch and thus to the development of a new island.

During the site inspection the participants discuss the relevant steps and measures of the project and agreed to the stone removal stages and area, groin reconstruction, lateral reconnection of the side branch downstream of rkm 2486.8 at different spots and repositioning of river kilometer signs. Special attention will be paid to the protection of groups of large and ecologically important trees and hollow trees.

A complementary project 20 km downstream of the project area was discussed using a printout aerial image.

The construction site at Mouth Ussel River is scheduled for the winter season of 2022 (approx. November - March).
