Travelling Across Bulgaria’s Ramsar Sites

LIFE project

The photo exhibition “The Uniqueness of the Wild Danube Islands”, organised by the Directorate of Persina Nature Park, has begun its journey across Bulgaria’s Ramsar sites.

Following its first presentation in front of the Visitor Centre of Persina Nature Park in the town of Belene, the exhibition’s second stop is the city of Silistra. The location – and our kind hosts, the Municipality of Silistra – were carefully chosen. Nearby lies the Srebarna Managed Reserve, one of the first wetlands in Bulgaria designated as a Ramsar Site under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat (Ramsar Convention).

Originally adopted as an international treaty focused on the protection of wetlands as habitats for waterbirds, the Ramsar Convention has since broadened its scope. Today, it addresses all aspects of wetland conservation and wise use, recognising wetlands as ecosystems of vital importance for biodiversity conservation, water management, and human well-being.

The exhibition tells the story of the WILDislands along the lower Danube and calls for their protection as unique natural features representing the wild character of the river. The photographs focus on the Belene Islands Complex, currently the largest Ramsar site in Bulgaria by area, located within the territory of Persina Nature Park.

The images are the work of renowned Bulgarian photographer Aleksandar Ivanov, whose powerful visual narrative highlights the ecological and cultural value of these dynamic river landscapes.

The exhibition will remain in Silistra until 30 September 2025 and is open for free to residents and visitors. It is displayed in the scenic Danube riverside park, with the Municipality of Silistra serving as host of the event.
