WILDislands in Bayern

LIFE project

On 11 November, representatives of DANUBEPARKS members: Donau-Auen National Park (Austria), Landratsamt Passau and the Aueninformationszentrum Neuburg-Ingolstadt (Germany), met with colleagues from the Regierung von Niederbayern, the Regierung der Oberpfalz, the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSV) in Hannover and Regensburg and the Blue Belt Programme of the German Federal Ministries for Transport (BMV) and Environment (BMUKN) in Regenesburg, Germany.

The meeting focused on planning future measures for riverbank revitalization and floodplain restoration along the Bavarian section of the Danube, where multiple sectors can join forces to enhance water quality, support navigation, and strengthen nature conservation.

The WILDisland concept and the LIFE WILDisland project were presented as successful examples of cross-sector cooperation between nature conservation and navigation authorities, to demonstrate how coordinated action can multiply conservation impacts along the entire Danube corridor.

We look forward to welcoming our German partners to project sites in Austria and Hungary in March 2026, where we hope to inspire further collaboration and bold new restoration initiatives for the Danube WILDisland Habitat Corridor.
