General Information

This old island is located in the main channel of the Sfantu Gheorghe branch. The island has an impressive appearance due to the lush look of the vegetation in the canopy area. The forest habitat is old and there are many tree trunks fallen and in various decomposing states on the ground.

It is the first island on this branch and is permanently surrounded by water at any level. Vegetation consists mainly of willows with poplar, ashes and Amorpha fruticosa shrubs. Most of the forest is inaccessible. Island’s shores are relatively steep and affected by erosion, especially on the frontal-left side, proof being the uprooted and fallen trees, in the water and on the shore.

Two amphibian species protected by OUG 57/2007 are present on this island – fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) and European tree frog (Hyla arborea), the first being a species of community interest. Due to this fact, a strict conservation of the island is necessary and also avoiding the disturbance of species activity through human presence.
