General Information

This island is developing in the back of the downstream part of the Tataru island, in the main channel of the Chilia branch. During the high water level the island is surrounded entirely by water and it is composed of two parts (the main body and a small part on the left side). Also, during the mean water level, the island becomes one big unit and partially surrounded by water. The vegetation consists mostly of willows with mulberry, ashes, hornbeam and amorpha fruticosa. Its relief is represented by two platforms made of smoothed levees, separated in the south-western side of the island by a narrow and shallow channel.

In areas where water currents are not strong and do not generate strong water dynamics, hydrophilic communities have been formed with floating and submerse aquatic plant species such as Salvinia natans, Trapa natans (threatened taxa at European level, included in the Red List of vascular plants from Romania. RO086SC ornithofauna is characterized mainly by bird species drawn to the rich tree vegetation. The island is used for nesting by a relatively low number of species, mainly of small size. Among the mammal species identified on this island, otter (Lutra lutra), raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), golden jackal (Canis aureus), wild cat (Felis silvestris), wild boar (Sus scrofa).
