General Information
This island is developing in the old course of Sfantu Gheorghe branch after the meander cutting. In the front part of the island (the youngest part) the sand is stabilized and covered partially by young willows. In its early stages of development this island was formed by two different islands that merged together due to continuous sedimentation processes. The different stages of evolution are visible through the different heights of the trees along the island. The island is partially covered by forest vegetation in early development stages, the upstream part being sandy and partially lacking vegetation.
- The island is populated by bird, mammal, amphibian and insect species protected by OUG 57/2007:
- Eurasian golden oriole (Oriolus oriolus)
- European bee-eater (Merops apiaster)
- Otter – (Lutra lutra)
- Fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina)
- Freyer’s purple emperor (Apatura metis)
