The coordinator of the LIFE WILDisland project was invited to take part in a Podium Discussion at the Closing Event of the LIFE DICCA project, which took part in Vienna in June 24-25th. Among the topics discussed were the similarities and common challenges of the two LIFE-funded projects and the impacts of climate change on the city of Vienna, the Danube, the Donau-Auen National Park as well as the possible ways to counteract through wetland restoration and supporting the natural hydrological regimes.
The EU co-financed project LIFE DICCA (Danube Island Climate Change Adaptation), which has been implemented by MA 45 Wiener Gewässer since 2018, ends in September 2024.
As part of the project, a large number of measures have been developed and implemented over the past 6 years to make the Danube Island green and recreational area climate-ready. These include, for example, the implementation of environmentally friendly sheep grazing, the creation of wind turbine-operated pond biotopes, the creation of new habitats for endangered animal species, sediment management measures, the realisation of citizen science projects for environmental education and many more.
At the end of the project, national and international experts will discuss the project results at a two-day conference. The focus was also on the LIFE EnCAM project, which is counteracting the negative effects of climate change through renaturalisation measures on the Liesingbach.
