Ongoing forest restoration in Romania

With 63 islands, Romania hosts by far the largest number of well-preserved natural islands. At the same time, hydrological alterations upstream increase and fasten the process of sedimentation in the side branches and as a result, some of the islands, such as RO164, lose more and more its character and unique qualities.

Since September 2022 Romsilva has started the improvement of the forest stands on 11 ha replacing the degraded forests with indigenous species. Following the initial removal and destruction of stumps and invasive alien vegetation, ploughing, disking, the external contractor hired has already started planting autochtonous species, such as white willow, black poplar, white poplar. The action will continue until June 2026 and its progress will be followed by annual checks of the plantations between September - October, as well as through aerial monitoring, using a drone especially purchased for the project.
