General Information
Two larger Danube islands connected by a narrow, artificially fortified, the eastern island is covered by a loose wet forest, which in places still has the character of a floodplain forest, where high softwood stands with silver willow, black poplar or purple willow and hybrid poplars. The light tree population leaves a pronounced herb layer with predominantly high perennial character. The nutrient-rich alluvial loam or sand promotes a nitrophilous species population. At the northern edge of the island one finds more reed fragments. The banks are often artificially fortified with large granite blocks.
The eastern island stands through two narrows, partly overgrown headlands. The tree population here is a bit younger. At the edge and further to the west one can still find alluvial forest areas. The herb layer is as above pronounced, nitrophil and relatively species-rich.
Habitat for amphibians in the more humid areas and reproductive habitat for water birds (ducks, swans etc.) in the quieter areas.
